The increased emphasis on process safety has resulted in an increased need to characterize the hazardous properties of materials. The purpose of the Hazards Laboratory is to improve:
- The quality and quantity of publically available data on hazardous chemicals.
- Our fundamental understanding of the properties of hazardous materials.
- The characterization methods.
- Our understanding of how these data are used to handle and process these materials safely.
Currently, the Hazards Laboratory is foscused on two areas:
The following equipment is supported by the laboratory. Click on the link for more information on each piece of equipment.
ARC - Accelerating Rate Calorimeter
APTAC - Automatic Pressure Tracking Adiabatic Calorimeter
20-Liter Flammability Sphere
Auto-Ignition Temperature Tester
Setaflash Flash Point Tester
RSST - Reactive Systems Screening Tool
The following companies have provided support for the Hazards Laboratory:
- The Dow Chemical Company
- Dow Corning
- BASF Corporation
- Fenwal Safety Systems
