Teaching


Current Courses

GE2100 Environmental Geology. This is a class for beginning geoscience majors and non-majors, and features local geology and issues and current departmental studies in environmental geosciences (Spring).

GE2100 Practice Final Exam

GE4150 Natural Hazard Mitigation. We study current mitigation agencies and warning systems, case studies of successes and failures in hazard mitigation, and technical tools for hazard study and mitigation such as satellite remote sensing, GPS, and GIS (Fall).

GE4250 Remote Sensing Fundamentals. This course focuses on the physics of electromagnetic theory, along with practical understanding of their applications (Spring).

GE5001 Intercultural Communication of Natural Hazards. This course was developed to help introduce students to the cultures, hazards and mitigation needs of Central America (Fall).


Past Courses and Links

GE2900 Utah Field Course. This is a summer course I co-teach with Jackie Huntoon, featuring field locations in Utah's National Parks, including Arches, Dinosaur and Natural Bridges (Summer; currently offered by different instructors).

Special Topics-Computing Resources. Not currently being taught. This course is designed to give students an introduction to and a reference for departmental computing and multimedia capabilities (not currently offered, but help site maintained).

Tutorial for Processing TOMS (Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer) Data: This tutorial for volcanic cloud analysis was developed for participants in the 2001 and 2003 Volcanic Clouds Workshops held at Michigan Tech.

Geologic Sketches. Some suggestions for making field sketches.

Applied Geophysics Laboratory for Introductory Environmental-Geology Courses: This is a description of the laboratory and supplementary links to landfill information sources, as part of a State of Michigan PACE project.
