Raised shorelines reflect changes in the lake geometry since the glacial retreat. They are due to a combination of processes including the evolution of the lake basin during periods when different outlets of the Lake dominated, to isostatic rebound of the surface after glacial unloading, and to global climate change.

Like bathtub rings, Old shoreline traces are found mimicking the current shore of the big lake, especially obvious at places like Bete Grise, Big Traverse Bay and Little Traverse Bay.

Bete Grise channel crosscuts the raised shorelines, which may reflect former sandbars which originally formed in the breaker zone, but are now well above the water line. The pines are growing on the bars and there is poorly drained bog without trees between the bars.
