NATIVE VEGETATION

Developing the Huron Creek Watershed Management Plan

The majority of upland areas in the watershed consist of mixed hardwood forests or coniferous evergreen forest.   Some upland hardwood tree species common to the watershed include red and sugar maple, beech, paper and yellow birch and white oak.   Examples of understory vegetation associated with these species include bracken fern, balsam fir and various club moss species.   The most prevalent upland evergreen tree species are white pine, red pine and spruce. Understory species commonly associated with these might include blueberry and sweet fern.

A variety of wetland areas exist within the watershed ranging from open water wetlands to cedar swamp and shrub-scrub type wetlands.   The open water wetland near Wal-Mart provides habitat for such plant species as cattail, rushes, bur reed, water horsetail, winterberry, sweet gale and water lily.   Species associated with cedar swamps include northern white cedar, sensitive fern and skunk cabbage.   A typical shrub-scrub wetland in the watershed might consist of red-osier dogwood, black cherry, various willow species or speckled alder.
