THE PURPOSE OF THIS WEBSITE

Developing the Huron Creek Watershed Management Plan

The purpose of this website is to provide information to the public as the Michigan Tech Center for Water Society prepares a watershed management plan for the Huron Creek watershed.  Many people have contributed to this process, including students in several Michigan Tech courses, students participating in undergraduate research projects, and participants in a series of Huron Creek advisory meetings.  The "acknowledgements" link on the main page lists all contributors.

Interest in the creation of a management plan was triggered by concerns associated with the rapid development of the Huron Creek watershed.  In the fall of 2005 and spring of 2006, the Michigan Tech Center for Water and Society prepared a proposal to develop a management plan for the Huron Creek watershed with the assistance of students in Alex Mayer's Geological Engineering Senior Design Project Course.   The proposal was submitted to the Michigan Dept. of Environmental Quality in March 2006.

The Center for Water and Society also facilitated public participation in the development of the plan, with students in an environmental decision making course organizing a public meeting and a tour of the creek.  Approximately 45 people attended the public meeting and about 25 people participated in the tour of the creek.   Out of this effort emerged a four-phase process for the development and implementation of the plan with community participation.
