WETLAND IMPROVEMENT AND MONITORING PLAN

Developing the Huron Creek Watershed Management Plan

This plan consists of two proposed components: 1) To offer to assist in mitigation wetland monitoring during the permit-required 5-year mitigation monitoring period, and/or 2) To monitor and maintenance the mitigation wetlands after the 5-year required monitoring period is over.

If agreement with the City of Houghton leads to assistance during the 5-year monitoring period, then the extent of work will be determined by the City. An example of assistance would be documenting plant species and hydrologic conditions at established monitoring stations. Ideally, this would include public participation and/or education opportunities.

If there is no agreement to participate in monitoring during the required 5-year period, then a plan will be established to continue monitoring and maintenance after the period is over. This plan may include monitoring vegetative diversity, removal of invasive plant species and monitoring of surface and ground water levels. (Water levels in the former Huron Lake mitigation area are maintained with a control structure/dam.) This plan will have an indefinite timeline and will be ideally implemented by gardening, botany or forestry groups, or high school or middle school classes.   This plan will also include monitoring & maintenance of native wetlands in the watershed if resources are available.  This plan will also include monitoring & maintenance of native wetlands in the watershed if resources are available.
