SOILS

Developing the Huron Creek Watershed Management Plan

Surface soils and conditions vary greatly across the watershed.   Upon examination of the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) soil survey map, the area appears to be a checkerboard of varying soil types, disturbed areas and rock outcrops.   In areas with lower elevations, organic soils associated with high water tables and wetlands are common.   In undisturbed gently sloping areas, sands and loams are common that contain gravel and cobbles.   On steeper slopes, soils are generally shallow and are mixed with areas of outcropping bedrock.   Also scattered across the watershed are mine rock dumps, quarries and areas that have been filled for building purposes or landfilled.
