STREAM CONDITIONS: FROG POOL TO SHARON AVENUE

Developing the Huron Creek Watershed Management Plan

This section of the stream begins north-northeast of Wal-Mart and the Wal-Mart parking lot at a location locally known as the Frog Pool.   This is a location where the creek flow slows and pools up.   The frog pool is located in an area where the creek valley widens and is has considerable amounts of vegetation and tree cover.   From here, the creek proceeds to the north through an area of dense commercial development. There, the creek valley narrows, vegetative cover reduces and all adjacent ground surfaces are covered with mine rock for slope stabilization.   Paved parking areas directly abut the creek valley, and leachate from an adjacent historical landfill site has been entering the creek. Recently the City of Houghton installed a leachate collection system just north of Sharon Avenue to abate this problem.
