MANAGING THE STREAMBED: OBJECTIVES

Developing the Huron Creek Watershed Management Plan

The objective is to maintain a streambed capable of supporting an aquatic ecological system, which generally means a streambed not covered by sediment flushed into the stream during storm events and by erosion.    Although Huron Creek does not provide habitat for fish, healthy stream bottoms are also necessary for macroinvertebrate populations, which are depended on by amphibians.   Bank erosion is a problem because it can cause considerable amounts of soil loss, which can in turn degrade the stream’s water quality.   In quiescent areas of the creek, this eroded soil can settle out of the water and accumulate on the creek bottom.
