FACTORS AFFECTING WATER QUALITY: ROAD SALT AND SAND

Developing the Huron Creek Watershed Management Plan

The city of Houghton spreads sand and some salt on the roads during the snow season.  When the snow melts this sand and salt can flow into Huron Creek.  Right now the amount of salt used is small, used mostly for major roads and sidewalk. It is unclear of its exact effect on the stream's water quality.   One purpose of monitoring is to determine if a problem does develop.
