The old landfills have not been in use for some time, but what was disposed of there is still decomposing.   For the landfill along M-26 and behind Taco Bell, the city of Houghton has installed and is maintaining a collection system for the discharge.   The system is collecting some of the flow, but the city is unsure if all the leachate is being collected.  Monitoring of water quality downstream from the site will be important to determine if any problematic discharges are continuing.
