Getting a Unix account

You will require a user account on the Lancaster Unix system, which is available to all registered students and staff at Lancaster University.
Details of how to use the Auto Registration facility are available from Information Systems Services in the Library.
If you do not yet have such an account, find a PC in a teaching laboratory and use the Auto Registration program.
Once registered to use computers at Lancster University, choose the Auto Registration option which enables the Unix account, and remember the new Unix username and password.

X terminals

This workshop is designed to be run using an X terminal, connected over the campus ethernet LAN to the central Unix system. You should use one of:

An X terminal in an area such as the Engineering Foyer Terminal Room.
A PC running the eXceed X terminal emulator software.
A Macintosh running the MacX X terminal emulator software.
A Sun computer used for an X terminal session.
Some other similar device running X terminal software.

Connecting to Unix

Whichever system you are using, start up the X terminal, connect to the Lancaster Unix system, and login with your own username and password. You should see the % sign prompt after the login messages of the day.
This primary session control window is known as an xterm.

Starting Netscape

Start the Netscape software in one window using the following command:
```
netscape &
```
The & ampersand sign spawns a separate computational process and allows you to activate another command. Resize the window to about three-quarters of the screen size so that you can see the tops of both this window and the xterm window.
Once the Netscape software has started for the first time, it is useful to configure it to use less of your disk filestore quota. This is done by use of the following Options menu steps at the top of the Netscape window:

Disk Cache Size:  0 Kilobytes

Show directory buttons - toggle off

If you appear to run out of disk storage quota, after you have installed the settings above, empty the .netscape-cache directory in your root area to recover space.
There may be be a problem with running the Netscape software under some older installed versions of PC eXceed. If part of the window appears to be blank, when you scroll the window up and down, use the View and Refresh menu steps at the top of the Netscape window to refresh the material in the visible area.
Type the following line into the Netscape location box and press return
```

It useful to use the Bookmarks menu at the top of the Netscape screen to Add Bookmark to your personal bookmark list for future quick reference.
Select the GEPH316 Seismic Data Processing course.
Select the 2000 Field Data Processing practical.
Select stage 1: Equipment set up and you should have reached this page on your Netscape screen.

Dual X windows operation

You should now have these workshop instructions in the Netscape window.
You should have another active X terminal window in which to perform the seismic data processing tasks, following the instructions in this Netscape window.
You can make either window active at the front by clicking on its header bar. Make sure you can easily see both header bars before continuing.
You may wish to resize both the Xterm and the Netscape windows, using the mouse and the bottom right hand corner of the windows, so that they both occupy about three quarters of the screen, with both their header bars visible at the same time. This will allow you to activate them in turn more easily.

X windows cut and paste

You can copy information from the Netscape window into the X terminal window using the mouse and mouse buttons.
1. Move the mouse cursor to the start of the desired information.
2. Hold the left mouse button down.
3. Wipe the mouse over the desired section of text to select it.
4. Release the left mouse button. The desired section of text should be highlighted.
5. Move the mouse to the bottom left prompt area of the X terminal window.
6. Click and release the middle mouse button. The desired text should now appear in the X terminal window. When using PC eXceed with a two button mouse, click both mouse buttons at the same time to simulate a middle mouse button.
7. Press the Return key to activate the command.
Practice copying and executing commands using the following list directory request.

ls -l
```
