Summary: (from www.imdb.com)
"When Trudi learns that her husband Rudi is dangerously
ill,
she suggests visiting their children in Berlin without
telling
him the truth. As Franzi and Karl don't care much about
their
parents, Trudi and Rudi go to the Baltic Sea... Rudi is
thrown
out of gear, even more when he learns that his wife wanted
to
live a totally different life in Japan..."
My Comments:
The film is well crafted although a bit flawed. It explores
the issue
of dealing with a spouse's death. The film shares some
similarities
with Ozu's "Tokyo Story" in that the aging parents will
have to
navigate between being close yet not becoming a burden to
their
modern kids' lives. (...Ms. Dorrie may be a little
heavyhanded in
these aspects compared to Ozu.)
Still, a good movie for contemplation during the holidays
where
families come together, - they should really appreciate and
"listen hard" to each other, before it is too late.
