Summary: (by Ella Taylor, via www.villagevoice.com )
"...Fausta (Magaly Solier) is a shy young villager
so terrorized by memories of rape sung to her by
her mother ...littered with unforgettable images of
incongruity (an orgy of frothy wedding dresses amid
dire poverty), destruction (an aerial view of a smashed
piano, and two women scrambling for pearls across a
class divide), and, finally, healing, in which a
taciturn man who makes things grow offers Fausta a way
out of her fear and the means to bury her beloved mother"

My Comments:

The cinematography and direction is very
good.  However, the movie is indeed slow,
and has a strange atmosphere of gloom.
Some reviews said it had magic realism, but
I did not detect too much - perhaps more an
  air of surrealism.

I think the movie is really a journey of
the main character from a state of almost
  paralized existence resulting from her
  mothers' horrible experience.  The journey
is indeed difficult and slow.  I do not
know much about the history of Peru, and
the movie does not really give explicit
details either.  The movie also contain
some songs that are quite sad
and beautiful (at least I think so).
