   Film Circuit <ifcplanet@aol.com>

"A fascinating and human portrayal of a
  once-famous fighter pilot and loyal
Stalinist named Nadezhda Petrovna. Now a
  41-year-old provincial schoolmistress,
she has so internalized the military ideas
of service and obedience that she cannot
  adjust to life in peacetime."

My Comments:

  An interesting character study about
  age and displacement.  The direction
is very good and the main actors are
pretty good and subtle for the most
  parts.

What I found impressive is that it was
made in 1966 by a very good Russian
director who most of us have not been
made aware of. Also, the  fact
that the female lead character was a
pilot during wartime and then a
  decorated hero is interesting...
they appear to be ahead of the US
(in the 60's) in the gender-gap closure as
far as military combat is concerned.
(according to wikipedia, the first group
of women was admitted into a U.S military
  academy in 1976).

In any case, I think the story does not
have to relate to military training at all,
but instead on how the lead characters has
a hard time adjusting to a change in stature,
age and relevance... so it could happen to
most of us as we move forward in age and
  retirement.

A shorter film and slow moving, but quite
  interesting to watch.
