Summary: (from www.imdb.com)
"... based on Deborah Ellis' bestselling
novel. Parvana is an 11-year-old girl
growing up under the Taliban in Afghanistan
in 2001. When her father is wrongfully arrested,
Parvana cuts off her hair and dresses like a
boy in order to support her family. Working
alongside her friend Shauzia, Parvana discovers
a new world of freedom and danger. With undaunted
courage, Parvana draws strength from the fantastical
stories she invents, as she embarks on a quest to
find her father and reunite her family..."
My Comments:
Nicely directed, animated and voiced. The story has
strong parallels with another movie we showed a few
years ago: "Osama" in which a girl decides to also
change her appearance in order to help the family
get by. Ultimately, the movie is concerned with the
courage of Parvana despite the dangers she faces from
religion police and power-crazed zealots.
The film has also been nominated for Best animation in
this year's Oscars...but of course, "Coco" was the
obvious choice of the academy.
