First we asked some fourth grade students from Barkell School to tell us what the rocks might say if they could talk...

NEXT WE ASKED THE UNIVERSITY POET IN RESIDENCE, MATT SIEGEL, TO SELECT AND READ SOME APPROPRIATE POEMS:

ROCK AND HAWK, BY ROBINSON JEFFERS (1887-1962)

UNNATURAL SELECTIONS:  A MEDITATION UPON WITNESSING A BULLFROG MAKING LOVE TO A ROCK BY JIM DODGE

Justin Norkol, another fourth grade student, Read an original poem:

“I was made from hot magma. See all these air pockets? There might be copper in them.”   Emma

“I was a piece of magma. I slowly hardened and formed. When I hardened I became basalt.”  Cyrus

“I came from a volcano where the lava comes from, and I am part of lava but I’m made when the lava has hardened. I am made of lots of minerals such as copper and types of crystals, but there’s more.  Did you know that I can break easily?”  Devin

“I am filled with native copper! I am made from lava, and I am a very important rock to those people.”

Clare

“I came from a volcano in Hawaii that bursted 50 feet high. You will find some native copper and quartz in me.”  Alex

“Hi, I’m a piece of basalt. I’m made up of magma and tons of other rocks. If you just found me, I am really hot!”  Onastasia

“I formed from hot bubbles and cooled and hardened while other minerals came into me. I once was magma.” Elynn

“I am made from lava. I’m the most abundant rock.”  Brendan

”Hi, I’m Bob Basalt , and I was made of lava. I was found in the ocean and you can find copper in me.” Izak

“I’m basalt, and I came from a volcano, when lava hardened. My favorite place to hang out is underneath oceans.”  Rachel

“I’m Joe, in a basalt rock, and I’m made from hot steaming lava.” Joe

“I am made of hardened lava flow. I have little parts of copper in me.” Hunter

“I am basalt. I came from Hawaii. I was made from magma or lava that cooled and hardened.” Yasmine

“I’m basalt. I was formed by hardened magma, and I’m dark –colored.” Jack

“I’m made from magma and I have lots of minerals.” Abby

“Hi, I’m basalt. I’m made by lava. I’m from the Keweenaw!” Ashlynn

“Hi, I’m basalt. What you might find in me are a bunch of amygdaloids and many kinds of minerals.” Phillip

“I would be in rocks. I would be squeezed.”  Andy

IF ROCKS COULD TALK

If rocks could talk, what would they say?

Would they talk about tomorrow or yesterday?

Or they might tell us their favorite month,

Like March or April or maybe May?

Would we ever know what rocks would say?

We might find out in the future some day.

Finally,  led by Craig Kurtz and Doug Opplinger, everyone sang a song written by Darroll Adams, The Rock
