Keweenaw Geoheritage Field/Boat Trips--
July 21-31, 2014

July 21-22 Lavas and the Keweenaw Rift   
This trip is to see and understand the Keweenaw’s black rocks and its deep-Earth-volcanism past. It is the site of Earth’s largest lava outpourings. Magma oceans existed here. We will see the huge lava flows and how they shape and influence the peninsula.
Highlights of the trip include: The Great lava reefs and shipwrecks of the Eagle Harbor to Copper Harbor shore, The Greenstone Flow (Earth’s Largest) and its anatomy, Copper and lavas--how do they relate? Manitou Island and the Lake Shore Traps, Bare Bluff and Keweenaw Rhyolite. Click on Green words below for more content.

What’s included:  Van and Boat transport and lunch. No overnight costs covered. Vans may be joined in Houghton one hour before the meeting time and transport back to Houghton from the end point each day is available to those who want/need it.

Day 1 (July 21) Visiting Expert:    Dr Chris Stefano
8:30 am: meet at Eagle Harbor Lighthouse Overlook (short walk)
9:30 am: Board Agassiz at Eagle Harbor Marina, visit Great Sand Bay, return past Eagle Harbor to Agate Harbor via Dipping Reefs. Use underwater camera at St Joseph shipwreck. Continue to Copper Harbor along reefs of the Lake Shore Traps. Arrive ~1:00.
1:00 pm: Field Lunch at Visitor Center in Copper Harbor.
1:45 pm: To Greenstone Flow Pegmatites, (short walk)
2:30 pm: Hunter’s Point (short walk)
4:00 pm: Delaware Mine. Walk in Mine (0.3 mi RT; wet feet possible!)

Day 2 (July 22) Visiting Expert:  Dr Chris Stefano
8:30 am: Meet at Brockway Mtn Summit. (short walk)
9:30 am Copper Harbor Marina, Board Agassiz, travel to Manitou Island via Green Rock and Horseshoe Harbor. Dock at Manitou dock, walk to lighthouse (~0.6 mi, flat terrain, rough trail). Return to Bete Grise and Lac la Belle, via High Rock Bay, Keystone Bay, Fish Cove, and Mt Houghton. 
1:30 pm: Late Lunch at Bete Grise.
2:15 pm: To Bare Bluff (hike to overlook of Fault, 0.7 mi (1.4 mi RT) good trail, slight climb)
4:30 pm: Haven Falls and Mt Bohemia
