Volcanic Ash

The evaluation of hazards from ashfall is a challenge, partly because the hazards to aircraft, and human health is closely linked to the amounts of ash that is finer than about 50 microns in diameter. Such fine ash is hazardous because it falls through the atmosphere slowly and can remain there after its dispersal. We do not yet understand what generates fine ash during eruptions. Fuego has significant proportions, which makes it different from other basaltic volcanoes with explosive eruptions.
