Fuego’s explosive eruptions produce cloud heights that penetrate the stratosphere and cause global atmospheric effects.  The volcanic clouds can disturb local jet aircraft traffic because the volcano is only 40 km from the Guatemala City airport.  Fuego generates a significant fraction of fine and very fine ash, in spite of its basaltic bulk composition. It also releases sulfur dioxide.
