Volcanic gases at Pacaya

Escape of gas from magma drives magma movement and eruptions, so volcanologists hope that gas emission rate measurements can be indicators of things to come. Measurements at Pacaya demonstrate large differences in gas emissions and a big excess of gas emission compared to lava emission rates.  Why and how does this happen?
