Medieval Bowed Instruments

vielle (viola, vioula), 13th-century style

During the thirteenth century, the oval-bodied fiddle seems to have been popular in many parts of Europe. Depictions of this sort of instrument appear in French, English and Iberian sources.

The soundbox, neck, and pegbox are carved from a solid piece of wood.


The instrument shown here is made from scottish maple and canadian spruce. The fingerboard and pegs are boxwood.


Strings:  gut

Overall length 26 1/2”; approx. string length 14 1/2 inches.


Recommended tuning: This model was designed to be quite versatile, please contact me to discuss the tuning possibilities.

It is currently strung with Jerome of Moravia’s first tuning transposed.
