Nyamuragira (also known as Nyamulagira) and Nyiragongo are among the most active volcanoes in the world. A chronology of known eruptions from the Virunga volcanoes will be posted shortly.

The image above is probably the first pictorial representation of degassing from Nyiragongo; drawn in 1898 just four years after the volcano's 'discovery' by Count von Götzen in 1894. The volcano is easily recognizable due to its distinctive profile.
