There are four navigational locks in the American side.
The first lock was constructed in 1855. The Poe Lock
is the largest lock in the St. Lawrence Seaway and is the
only one which can handle the super freighters which are
more than 1,000 feet (308 meters) long and 105 feet
(32 meters) wide. Locks raise and lower lakers and ocean-going
vessels 21 feet (6.5 meters) between Lake Superior (the higher
end) and Lake Huron (the lower end).
