- I was a postdoctoral scholar (2010-2012) at the University of California, Berkeley working with Professor Vera Serganova.
- I was a postdoctoral scholar (2009-2010) at the University of Ottawa working with Professor Erhard Neher.
- I did my Ph.D. in mathematics under the supervision of Professor Arturo Pianzola at the University of Alberta. My Ph.D. thesis was titled "Descent Constructions for Central Extensions of Infinite Dimensional Lie Algebras".
- I did my M.Sc. in mathematics under the supervision of Professor Changchang Xi at Beijing Normal University. I was nurtured by the representation theory research group at BNU including Professors Yingbo Zhang and Bangming Deng.
- During my undergraduate studies I took the course on abstract algebra (taught by Professor Guoxing Ji in 1999) through which I developed an appreciation of the structures in mathematics.
- I am grateful to my high school math teacher Mosen Wang who showed me the beauty of mathematics and taught me to enjoy math as an art.

- Modeling Competition in Mathematics is an annual national competition for undergraduate students in mathematics organized by China Industry and Applied Mathematics Society. Three students form a team and design a mathematical model within three days to solve an assigned research project and submit a scientific paper to be evaluated. I attended the competition in 1999 and 2000. It was a wonderful experience.
- The classification model for DNA sequences (with L. Yuan and H. Zhang), China National Modeling Competition in Mathematics, Xian, 2000. This paper received the third prize in this competition.
- The optimum checking and replacing model for automatics lathe (with Z. Hu and L. Yuan), China National Modeling Competition in Mathematics, Xian, 1999. This paper received the first prize in this competition.
