Office hours:
Monday - Friday 10:00-11:00
Monday - Thursday 1:00-2:00
By appointment (email for arrangements).
Goal:
Over the next fourteen weeks we will be working to strengthen your conceptual understanding of algebra and trigonometry and provide multiple ways of representing mathematical ideas.
Text:
Functions Modeling Change (2nd Edition) by Connally, Hughes-Hallett, Gleason et al., published by Wiley.
Pace: Fast!
It is our assumption that you have seen this material before coming to MTU. Our aim is to help you understand, internalize, and retain concepts that you will need in your Calculus courses and beyond. There is not time to cover all details of the material in this course, so it will be important for you to review these on your own. You will be expected to read the book and work all assigned homework problems.
Help:
Help is available from many different sources, including:
1. Come to my office hours or make an appointment;
2. The Mathematics Learning Center (MLC) in Fisher 128: walk-in hours or personal appointments;
3. Fellow classmates.

Attendance:
Attendance and participation are crucial to your success. I will be counting on you to be in class and to be prepared. If you are unable to attend a class due to an illness or personal loss, you must contact me as soon as possible. Beginning in the 2nd week of the semester, an attendance policy is in effect. Students in MA1032 may miss no more than 2 classes during each 3 week period. Those who miss more than 2 classes in each 3 week period (beginning with 2-4 weeks) will incur a grade penalty of 1/2 letter grade for each period. Any "excused" absence -- games for athletes, illness with letter from the Dean, etc.--is not counted as part of this attendance requirement.
Excused Absences:
If the circumstances are beyond your control (such as accidents, death in the family, sickness that requires a doctor's care), make-up quizzes or exams may be given provided you contact me immediately and receive permission. Students who represent MTU in varsity sports and miss their assignments or test due to travel to and from a game will be given make-ups provided that you inform me one week before. Please inform me during the first two weeks of class if you are a varsity athlete.
Gateway Test:
During the first week of classes, all students in MA1032 will take a "Gateway Test" consisting of 10 algebra questions. Students who score 70% or higher have a satisfactory score. We recommend that students who score less than 70% move to MA1030 (formerly MA0099) if you have not already passed MA0099 with a C or better.
Switching to Another Course:
If you are feeling completely overwhelmed during the FIRST 1 1/2 WEEKS of class, please see Ann Humes, Director of First Year Mathematics, in Fisher 205B.
Dropping a Course:
Last day to drop with a full refund: Wednesday, September 13
Drop-date (no grade): Friday, September 22
Drop with a "W": Friday, Octover 27
Homework and Quizzes:
Daily homework and assignments will be given and questions answered in class. Quizzes will be given and homework will be collected throughout the semester. The content of the quizzes will be very similar to the problems that you are assigned for homework; it is critical that you complete each assigned problem. NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES WILL BE GIVEN.
Workshop Days:
Workshop days will be held throughout the semester (see daily schedule). Attendance at the workshop is mandatory. During these sessions, you will work collaboratively with your team members to complete problems that extend and review your understanding of the topics taught in class. At the end of each workshop session, your team will be required to turn in an assignment.
Exams:
Two one-hour exams, a common midterm, and a common comprehensive final exam will be given. Test dates and times appear on the daily schedule. Please mark the dates on your calendar today!
NO MAKE-UPS! NO EARLY FINALS!! The date of the final exam will be announced at a later date. Do not make travel arrangements for the end of the semester until the exam date and the time are announced.
Midterm Grades:
During the week of October 16-19, I will be reporting a mid-term grade for all first year students, based on your work completed to that point. The report will be either "satisfactory" or "unsatisfactory." Students who have maintained a grade of C (70% or above) will receive a "satisfactory" report.
Grading:
Exam I 20%
Midterm 20%
Exam III 20%
Quizzes/Homework 10%
Workshops 10%
Final Exam 20%
TOTAL 100%
Scale:
Your final grade will be based on the following scale:
90-100% A
85-89.9% AB
80-84.9% B
75-79.9% BC
70-74.9% C
65-69.9% CD
60-64.9% D
0-60% F
We recommend that students who receive a grade of CD or D in the course repeat the course.
