Help:  Help is available from many different sources, including:
  1. The instructor during posted office hours or by appointment.
  2. The Mathematics Learning Center (MLC) in Fisher 128; walk-in hours or personal appointments.
  3. Fellow classmates.
  4. SEEK HELP BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE.
Attendance:  Attendance and participation are crucial to your success in this course. The instructor will be counting on you to be in class and to be prepared. If you are unable to attend a class due to an illness or personal loss, you should contact the instructor as soon as possible.
Labs:  You MUST register at www.mathlab.mtu.edu for required weekly labs by Wednesday, Jan.17th.  There is no lab during the 1st week of the course.  This accounts for the comp day for the evening midterm exam.
Basic Skills Test:  The Basic Skills Test is designed to test your knowledge of material from previous math courses.  It counts as 10% of your final course grade; you need to score 20 out of 25 to receive full credit.  The first exam will be given on Wednesday, January 17, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in Fisher 135.  If you do not pass the exam on the first try, you will have two other opportunities to retake the test.  These retakes will be from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 23 and Thursday, January 25.  Please refer to the attached BST policy for more details.
Dropping a Course:
  1. Last day to drop with a full refund:  Wednesday, January 24
  2. Drop-date (no grade):  Friday, February 2
  3. Drop with a “W”: Friday, March 9
Homework and Quizzes:
  1. It is expected that you work on homework daily.  Homework will not be turned in; however, if you do not consistently work through the problems, it is likely you will fail the course.
  2. Frequent in-class quizzes will be given.  They will mainly consist of homework problems.  When solving problems, always write neat and logical arguments.  The grading scale is as follows:
3 pts: Practically perfect (very long problems need not be complete, but 5 minutes of quality work is expected)
2 pts: Minor mistakes, but you seem to understand this very well
1 pt: Many mistakes, but you seem to understand this somewhat
0 pt: You do not seem to understand this, or no work
  3. NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES WILL BE GIVEN.  Three quizzes will be dropped to accommodate unexpected emergencies.
  4. After three weeks, this policy will be evaluated and changes will be made if necessary.
Exams:  Two in-class exams, a comprehensive midterm, and a comprehensive final exam will be given. Test dates appear on the daily schedule. Please mark the dates on your calendar today!  All exams may include both calculator and non-calculator sections.  The midterm and the final are comprehensive departmental exams, which may also include a calculator and non-calculator section.  The midterm is an evening exam and is scheduled from 6:00-7:30 p.m. on Monday, February 26.  NOTE:  There will be NO EARLY OR LATE MIDTERMS OR FINALS.  Please notify your instructor during the 1st week of class if you have a class conflict with the midterm.  Do not make plans to leave early at the end of the semester until the final exam schedule has been announced.
Midterm Grades:  During the week of February 26 -- March 1, the instructor will be reporting a mid-term grade for all first year students, based on your work completed to that point.  The report will be either "Satisfactory" or "Unsatisfactory."  Students who have maintained a grade of C (70%) will receive a “Satisfactory” report.
Comments:
  1. If you did not earn at least a C in MA1032, please consider retaking the course.
  2. If you miss an exam due to illness, emergency, etc., you must have a doctor’s note or a note from the Dean of Students.  Please let the instructor know ASAP if you will be absent.
  3. You are expected to prepare for class each day.  This means that you should read the section being discussed that day, as well as complete all assigned homework problems.  You should expect to spend a minimum of 2 hours outside of class for every one hour of class time.
