Here is a non-exhaustive list of skills that I value, not necessarily in any order:
1) Good academic performance;
2) Knowledge and experience in using LaTeX to prepare papers (I require all my students to learn and use LaTeX);
3) Prior experience in writing and publishing papers;
4) Good communication skills, both written and oral;
5) Excellent programming and math skills;
6) Evidence of creative spirit.

Good communication is absolutely essential; hence, if you plan to talk to me about a position, please be prepared to discuss your past research experiences and your goals for graduate work.
