The Application Process

Upon receipt of your initial letter of inquiry, an application packet will be sent to you, including the following information:

a copy of this booklet
$\star$
an application form
$\star$
three forms for letters of recommendation
$\star$
some additional information.

Please read all of the enclosed information carefully. Following are the steps to apply for admission to our department.

1.
Send the following materials to The Graduate School, Michigan Technological University, 1400 Townsend Drive, Houghton, Michigan 49931-1295, U.S.A., by February 15.

(a)
The completed application form.
(b)
A statement of purpose. Special attention should be given to your statement; well-motivated students have a better chance of being admitted into most
programs.
(c)
The application fee is $30 for US applicants; $35 for International applicants.
The application fee cannot be waived.
(d)
Official transcripts from all colleges or universities you have attended.

2.
Have official test scores sent directly to the Graduate School. Do not send copies.
(a)
All foreign students must take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign
Language) test. Your official scores must be reported to the Graduate School by the TOEFL office no later than February 15. NOTE: The Department of
Mathematical Sciences will not consider an applicant with a TOEFL score of less than 580 (paper-based) or 237 (computer-based) for a teaching assistantship. Students with a score of at least 60 on section 1 (listening comprehension) of the TOEFL test will be given higher priority.
(b)
All applicants must take the general GRE test. Scores must be submitted directly to the Graduate School (by ETS) no later than February 15.

3.
Materials sent directly to the Department of Mathematical Sciences

The Department of Mathematical Sciences requires three (3) letters of recommendation which should be received in the department by February 15. Select three individuals (preferably professors) to use the enclosed forms to prepare recommendations for you. The recommendations should be submitted by the recommender directly to:
