Teaching and Mentoring Workshop I: Teaching AI Working Sessions

A discussion on how to engage and excite students when teaching AI concepts. Small groups will consider and share lecture materials, demos, student projects, and other teaching methodologies. (slides)

The small groups, from the previous session, will present their ideas and approaches to teaching. A summary discussion and documentation of the information will follow.

ml-class.org: Teaching machine learning to 100,000 students (Joint work with Daphne Koller) Last year, Stanford University offered three online courses, which anyone in the world could enroll in and take for free. Students were expected to submit homeworks, meet deadlines, and were awarded a ``Statement of Accomplishment'' only if they met our high grading bar. Offered this way, my machine learning class had over 100,000 enrolled students. To put this number in context, in order to reach an audience of this size, I would have had to teach my normal Stanford class (enrollment of ~400) for 250 years.

In this talk, I'll report on the outcome of this bold experiment in distributed education. I'll also describe my experience teaching one of these classes, and leading the development of the platform used to teach two of the classes. I'll describe the key technology and pedagogy ideas used to offer these courses, ranging from easy-to-create video chunks, to a scalable online Q&A forum where students can get their questions answered quickly, to sophisticated autograded homeworks. Importantly, using a ``flipped classroom'' model, we also used these resources to improve the education of the enrolled, on-campus, Stanford students as well.

Whereas technology and automation have made almost all segments of our economy---such agriculture, energy, manufacturing, transportation---vastly more efficient, education today isn't much different than it was 300 years ago. Given also the rising costs of higher education, the hyper-competitive nature of college admissions, and the lack of access to a high quality education, I think there is a huge opportunity to use modern internet and AI technology to inexpensively offer a high quality education online. Through such technology, we envision millions of people gaining access to the world-leading education that has so far been available only to a tiny few, and using this education to improve their lives, the lives of their families, and the communities they live in. Following the success of the first set of courses, there are now 14 planned courses for Winter quarter (offered by instructors from U. Michigan, UC Berkeley, and Stanford), and we hope to grow this effort further over time.

Student and Faculty Travel Scholarships

Thanks to the generosity of the National Science Foundation, we are able to offer a limited number of scholarships to students and faculty to provide partial support for the costs involved in attending EAAI-12. In addition, a small number of these scholarships are available particularly for those whose work is related to sustainability and AI.

To apply for a scholarship, please send the following information to Matthew E. Taylor (taylorm@lafayette.edu) by the scholarship application deadline. We will notify you of scholarship decisions prior to the AAAI/EAAI early registration deadline.

  1. Put "EAAI Scholarship" in the subject line of your email.
  2. Submit:

    • Your CV (PDF preferred).
    • A statement (up to one page) of what you expect to gain by attending EAAI. Please include a list of courses recently taught (and any relevant innovations developed in those courses, if applicable) and/or courses you anticipate teaching in the coming academic year. If your work (or contribution to EAAI) relates to sustainability, please also mention this. Finally, please list previous AAAI conferences attended, if any.
    • An itemized list of your expected travel costs (registration, transportation, hotel, etc.).
    • Please also answer the following questions:

      • Are you a co-author of an accepted EAAI paper, poster, or Model AI Assignment?
      • Are you presenting at EAAI?
      • Have you previously attended EAAI?
      • Does your work/contribution relate to sustainability and AI?

As a scholarship recipient, you will commit to:

  1. Attend EAAI and the EAAI Mentoring Workshop on July 23rd and 24th.
  2. Submit a post-conference summary of your EAAI experience and feedback on what was useful and what could be improved. We will use this in our post-conference report to the NSF as well as to consider changes for the next EAAI.

EAAI-12 paper submissions should be in one of the following formats:

Author Registration
Authors must register at the EAAI-12 paper submission site. You will then receive a login and password via email, which will enable you to log on to submit an abstract and paper. In order to avoid a rush at the last minute, authors are encouraged to register well in advance of the paper submission deadline.
