Heat Capacity is the amount of energy needed to change the temperature of any material.  Water has a heat capacity that is 4-5 times higher than rock or dirt.  Since earth’s surface is 3/4 water and 1/4 dirt and rock, the water covered parts heat more slowly in the sun. This leads to many profound aspects of our daily life, including wind and weather.
