Doctoral students, in consultation with the Director of Graduate Studies,
are encouraged to find a research advisor and identify a research problem
as soon as possible. This advisor should be selected before taking
the qualifying examination. Upon passing the qualifying examination,
an advisory committee
consisting of at least three additional members of the graduate faculty
will then be selected in consultation with the student and
his or her research advisor.
At least one of these members will be from
a cognate (outside) department or program.
The Dean of the Graduate School must approve the advisory committee.
